What are the key benefits of weightlifting for women?
While some women have worries that strength training will make them appear “manly,” it will not lead them to bulk up. Simply, it will increase muscle mass and enhance the body’s shape. Strength training is commonly associated with men’s fitness, but the benefits are enormous for women, too!
- Increases bone density – Bone density reduces in women as they age, particularly after menopause. Weight-bearing exercise stresses the bones – not too much, but enough to cause them to strengthen. This has the potential to prevent osteoporosis. Women are more prone to osteoporosis as they age.
- Muscle is fundamental to human movement; keeping muscle mass as you age may help avoid injury, enhance range of motion, and aid in everyday tasks.
- Weight loss – Contrary to common belief, strength training can aid in weight loss. Strength exercise, like cardio, burns calories, which can help you establish a caloric deficit.
- Strength training also raises excess post-oxygen consumption (EPOC), which occurs when the body continues to burn calories after exercise for several hours.
- Better quality of sleep – Recent studies have shown those who participate in resistance training experience better, uninterrupted sleep. Improved sleep can help keep your overall wellness in alignment, especially as you age.
- Increases energy – Exercise causes the body to release endorphins, which boost mood and energy. However, prolonged cardiovascular exercise can deplete the body’s energy stores. On the other hand, strength training can be completed in 30 to 60 minutes, leaving you with more energy to power through the day.
- Better functional strength – Women need strength to get through the day. Whether it’s a long day at the office, carrying toddlers around, cutting the grass, or all the above, you need functional strength to accomplish everything needed in a day. Resistance training improves strength in key areas like the core, legs, lower back, and upper body.
- Research has revealed resistance training results in better, more uninterrupted sleep. Improved sleep can help you maintain your overall wellness.
- Exercise allows the body to release endorphins, which increase mood and vitality.
- Women naturally require resistance exercise to strengthen critical regions such as the core, legs, lower back, and upper body.
